Hiking Information

Dwellingup is a hiker’s paradise, boasting a diverse range of trails that showcase the best of Western Australia’s unique bushland. Prepare to be immersed in towering Jarrah and Marri forests, discover unique wildflowers (seasonal), and keep an eye out for native wildlife like kangaroos, emus, and a variety of birdlife, including the endangered Black Cockatoos.

Trails

Dwellingup is a hub for some of Western Australia’s most famous and spectacular long-distance trails, as well as numerous shorter walks perfect for a day trip.

  • Bibbulmun Track: A world-renowned long-distance walking trail stretching almost 1,000 km from Kalamunda to Albany. Many of our local trails connect with or form part of this iconic track, offering access to its unique huts and breathtaking sections. We provide detailed local maps for our tours.
  • Nyingarn Trail: Experience the iconic Bibbulmun Track with the Nyingarn Bidi, a three-day, two-night loop trail in Dwellingup. This Class 4 hike winds through jarrah and yarri forests, planted pines, and eastern blue gums.
  • Local Loop Trails: Numerous well-marked local trails provide shorter, accessible options for all fitness levels, winding through lush forests and past scenic lookouts.

Maps & Information: We provide detailed maps for our tours. For more in-depth information or to plan your own extended adventure, comprehensive Bibbulmun Track maps can be purchased at the Dwellingup Adventures trails shop. The Dwellingup Trails and Visitors Centre is also an excellent resource for local trail information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to frequently asked questions about working with us.

  • What fitness level is required for hiking in Dwellingup?

Dwellingup has a range of trails to suit everyone from pram-friendly, gentle loops to challenging, over-night hikes. Our tours specify the required fitness level (e.g., basic, medium).  Always check the tour or trail description for specific requirements.

  • Is mobile reception available on the trails?

Mobile reception can be unreliable in the Dwellingup bush, with pockets of service depending on your phone and provider. For safety, it’s wise not to rely solely on your mobile. Your guide on tours will carry satellite communication, and emergency landlines are available at key locations in the Lane Poole Reserve (marked on maps).

  • What kind of wildlife might I see?

The Dwellingup region is rich in native wildlife. You might spot kangaroos, emus, various bird species including the iconic Black Cockatoos, and if you’re lucky, even a Quokka! Remember to observe wildlife from a distance and never feed them.

  • Are there facilities like toilets and water on the trails?

Facilities vary by trail. On long-distance trails like the Bibbulmun Track, huts often have rainwater tanks and pit toilets. For day walks, facilities may be limited, so it’s always best to carry enough water and plan your toilet breaks. Always Leave No Trace – carry out what you carry in.

  • What should I do in case of an emergency on a self-guided hike?

If you have an emergency on a self-guided hike, first assess the situation and your location using your map. For medical emergencies, call 000. If you have a non-medical emergency or need assistance, contact Dwellingup Adventures on 9538 1127. Ensure you always tell someone your hiking plan before you set off and take a first-aid kit with you.
