Your exciting day begins at 10:30 AM at our Tours Desk, conveniently located at the award-winning Dwellingup Trails and Visitors Centre, home to the fantastic Waypoints Café. Here, we’ll get you kitted out with all your essential safety gear.

From there, you’ll follow one of our guides in your own vehicle to the finish point of your rafting journey. This clever bit of planning means your car is waiting for you when you finish! We’ll then transport you and your raft up to the starting point, making a few stops along the way to point out key river features and give you a helpful river brief.

Safety and Equipment

Our rafts and equipment are supplied in good order for your adventure. The section from Yarragil to Dwaarlindjirraap is generally suitable for beginner paddlers. Our staff will give you a basic safety briefing covering what to do if you happen to fall out – it happens now and then, and it’s all part of the fun!

Two roads run parallel to the river: River Road (on river right, looking downstream) and Murray Valley Road (on river left, looking downstream). River Road can lead you back to your vehicle should you need to walk out for any reason. If you are not at Dwaarlindjirraap at the designated pick-up time, Dwellingup Adventures staff will travel along River Road to check your location and provide assistance.

Crucial Safety Point: Along the route you will see Bobs Crossing. You must exit and walk around the crossing. You must avoid going close to the tunnels. At certain river levels they can be extremely hazardous. They are easily avoided. Never attempt to paddle over the crossing. At the finish point, you will clearly see Baden Powell Water Spout. This is a severe drop that forms a Grade 4 rapid in high water and dangerous exposed rocky formations in low water. The area is clearly marked and easily avoided. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU DO NOT PROCEED OVER OR DOWNSTREAM OF BADEN POWELL WATER SPOUT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to frequently asked questions about working with us.

  • What should I bring and wear?

You’ll need to bring your own water and food, or you can pre-purchase a Picnic Package from us. Definitely bring a change of clothes to leave in your vehicle – just in case you take an unplanned dip! For what to wear, it’s important to stay warm. Proper fitting wetsuits or polypropylene thermal wear are excellent. Avoid cotton, as it stays wet and cold. Your old, reliable runners are perfect for water activities; bare feet or unsecured footwear are not suitable. We also offer thermal wear packages for hire if you need them.

  • What are the river levels like for this tour?

The Murray River relies on natural rainfall, so this tour is dependent on sufficient water levels. Fast Water Rafting is not available during low water levels. We’ll let you know if conditions are unsuitable for your pre-booked tour, as we have safety cut-off points for both high and low water. Generally, June to September are the best months for this experience.

  • Are there any major rapids or difficult sections?

The tour features two to three small rapid features and the Grade 2 Island Pool rapid. There are also a number of faster, narrow channels to navigate. Island Pool rapid has great pedestrian access, so you can easily exit the river after the rapid, carry your raft up the pathway, and run it again if you’re feeling adventurous!

  • What if there's an emergency?

Your safety is our top priority. Dwellingup Adventures staff will give you a safety brief before you start. Mobile reception can be unreliable in the reserve. If you require an emergency phone, there are two landlines in the park: one at the Entry Ranger Station (if occupied by rangers) and a phone box close to the manager’s residence at Nanga Bush Camp. Both locations are on your map. Dwellingup Adventures is not a medical emergency response agency. For all medical emergencies, you should call 000. Try to note or describe your location as best you can. Emergency services will typically try to get to you. If you can, please secure all gear and rafts up from the river and note your location. You can also call Dwellingup Adventures on 9538 1127 to help us assist emergency staff. For a non-medical emergency, call us directly for assistance. If you have to leave the river, please secure all gear and rafts up from the river and note your location.
