Self guided tours are designed for those who want to enjoy a more intimate experience without a large group. Dwellingup Adventures assist in support at the start and at the end. The tours are self-guided and while little experience is required customers should be comfortable with the walking, canoeing or riding aspect and independence the tours allow.
Tours involving a canoe component are subject to normal seasonal river levels. Due to safety, self guided river tours are not suitable for the single traveler.
Camping equipment may be hired as an extra, see hire equipment.

Pack ‘n’ Paddle Customer Detailed Information
This is a self guided/supported tour. No guides accompany you, however we do assist you in gear, supplies delivery and walkers transport.
The tour is run on demand and enquiries are best made by phone in regard to canoe availability. Booking is essential although as normal canoe hire no deposit or bond is required.
Day 1
Your party arrives at Dwellingup at a time of your choosing. The walk to Swamp Oak Hut via the Bibbulmun Track is about 13.1kms. How long you take depends upon your level of fitness and experience. With a backpack allow 5 hours for a leisurely walk with plenty of breaks. Experienced hikers will be able to do it faster.
When you arrive at Dwellingup we complete the paper work for the canoe hire and you pay. You leave us your clothing/equipment/food that you wish to be delivered to Island Pool on day 2 for your swap to canoe mode. You may have your own container or you may hire a 30 litre dry barrel. Any orders of fresh baked muffins, bread, buns and assorted items can be pre-ordered and pre-paid for at the local Foodland bakery. We will collect them and bring them out on day 2.
Swamp Oak Hut is part of the chain of about 32 huts that span the length of the 963 kilometre Bibbulmun Track. The hut is a 3 sided shelter with wide tiered platforms used at a bunks. The hut has a water tank, pit toilets, picnic table, tent sites and a fire pit. The proximity to Dwellingup makes it a popular walk and it’s a good idea to take a tent if you prefer a bit more privacy. Take a stove for cooking. While a fire pit is provided the area is being denuded of ground wood. Insects and little animals need a place to sleep too!
Day 2
You meet us at Island Pool at 10am. The walk from Swamp Oak is about 1.5 kilometres and takes about 40 minutes. We deliver your supplies as packed on day 1 along with any shop orders, your canoe and associated safety gear. Your backpack is taken back to Dwellingup ready for your return.
The canoe leg is 6kms and concludes at Baden Powell Water Spout. Baden Powell Water Spout is a severe drop that forms a grade 4 rapid in high water and exposed rocky formations in low water. The area is clearly signposted and to go past it you would need to take the canoe out of the water, carry it 300 metres around the waterfall past the car park and the sign that indicates Baden Powell. We meet you there at 2pm and return your party and all equipment back to Dwellingup. The canoe leg is suitable for novices and beginners and at low water some portage or at least getting out at shallow spots is required.
We Supply
One, two or three person canoes are available. We provide paddles, buoyancy vests, water sports helmets and laminated river maps.

You will need to carry your overnight camping gear, water and food. Water is easily carried in saved milk containers. Food items that perish if wet will need to be stored in your dry barrel. You will need to bring your own water and food. Water is easily carried in saved milk containers. Food items that perish if wet will need to be stored in your dry barrel. Bring a change of clothes that you can leave in your vehicle in case you fall out, it happens now and then.
River Levels
The Murray River is reliant on natural rainfall patterns. Dwellingup Adventures will advise you if the water levels are unsuitable. We have a safety cut off point for high water. Fast water rafting is not available at low water levels.
There are 2 small rapid features and the Grade 2 Island Pool rapid. There are a number of faster narrow channels. Island Pool rapid has good pedestrian access and rafters can exit the river after the rapid and carry the raft up the pathway and run the rapid again.
Timing
The timing structure has multiple variables including rafters experience, weather conditions, water levels and is not an exact science. Generally, allow for paddling speed at about walking pace, 3-4kms per hour. Our support staff will collect all rafts at 3pm. Your vehicle at the finish point will provide comfort if you are early.

Park entry fees are not included in in any tour costs and must be paid separately by the customer on entering the park.
Safety
The section from Yarragil to Bobs Crossing is generally suitable for confident paddlers. Parents will determine the suitability of their own children but it is common for an adult and a young child to do the tour. We supply a double paddle for the adult. Two roads run parallel to the river, River Road on river right (looking downstream) and Murray Valley Road, river left (looking downstream). River Road will lead you back to your vehicle should you need to walk out.
If you are not at Bobs Crossing at the designated pick up time Dwellingup Adventures staff will travel along River Road to check your location.
If you require an emergency phone, there are two land lines in the park.
Entry Ranger Station: if occupied rangers have a phone.
Nanga Bush Camp: a phone box close to the manager’s residence is available for emergency and local calls only at no cost. Both locations are on your map.
